Porolis Technologies (Porolis) has announced that it will embark on a collaborative R&D program leveraging artificial intelligence to assess gemstones, together with the Gemmological Institute of Colombo (GIC).

Porolis offers advanced capabilities in optical engineering and AI computer vision expertise, and has invented a novel imaging device, GemLUX® KROMA™ to capture the gemstone’s appearance, magnified inclusion and optical properties. The sample handling, illumination and camera system of  KROMA™ has been specially designed to ensure that the gemstone colour is faithfully and accurately captured. Further, KROMA™ ’s high-resolution lens and camera-sensor design is capable of viewing the microscopic inclusion of the gemstone. The sharp digital image of the inclusion is helpful in revealing how a gemstone was formed and whether it is a natural or synthetic stone, and in some cases indicative of its origin. The digital image is shared with the gemstone owner, and in this way expert analysis can be performed at any place and time, not limited to the confines of gem labs.

A significant scope of the R&D collaboration is in the field of AI machine learning application for colour grading, treatment determination and finger-printing of gemstones.

GIC’s extensive dataset of expert labelled gemstones, has been the basis for training of Porolis’s AI machine-learning model. A successful application has already emerged where the AI-powered sapphire colour grading system is today highly accurate and matching the performance of trained gemmologists.
